John 14:6

“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” John 14:6

The classic work by John Bunyan titled “The Pilgrim’s Progress” is a must-read for every Christian. It is a story of a man named “Christian” who determined that life in the city of destruction was not the best existence. Guided by the evangelist, he headed out on the journey, full of many perils and trials to the Celestial City. This journey describes the struggles of the life of a Christian. The path of a believer’s life is nothing if it’s not challenging.

The Way

Most of us are determined to do things “our way”. The results are usually not the best. Many have messed up their lives doing things their way. For there is a path that seems right to a man, but the end of it is destruction (Proverbs 14:12). How about you? Have you ever adamantly followed your own path? Jesus identifies Himself as the way, the truth and the life. Those that decide to follow the way of Jesus enjoy restoration from the bondage of sin (Romans 8:1). Does this mean that this is an easier choice? Jesus in Matthew 7:13, makes it clear that this is never an easy way when he says, “But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it”.

The Truth And Life

The truth has become something scarce, and many are no longer seeking God for the truth. Jesus does not claim to be the culmination of many truths, but that He is the truth. The truth is God’s very reality revealing itself in Jesus. He brought the truth of God into the world and embodied it.

Jesus is also the life for all who repent. They obtain His life when they turn away from their sinful nature and believe Him alone for their salvation. We can trust Him with our lives and the lives of other people. In Jesus, there is life, and this life is the light of all men. It is only Jesus that can deliver us from death – whether physical, spiritual or eternal death. The enemy’s goal is to steal, to kill and to destroy while Jesus came so that we may have life in abundance (John 10:10).

The Savior

The nature of man is spiritually dead. Jesus is also our connection to God. These words are exclusive to some, but no more valid words have such an impact on those who believe them. There are not many ways to heaven, or that Jesus is one of our ways to know God. Let it be proclaimed appropriately and preached that Christ is the only way through which men and women come to the knowledge of God. This is not being impolite, intolerant or politically incorrect; it is the absolute truth.

Many of us do not want to accept and believe that Jesus is the only way to salvation. If they were to accept it, they would have to accept the painful reality that their beloved mothers, fathers, children etc., who are unbelievers, will not make it to heaven. This revelation is what fuels the need for us to share Jesus with other people. It is not too late; they too can be led to Christ for salvation.
