Psalm 119:105 – Your Word Is A Lamp

Lamp unto my feet - Psalm 119:105
Lamp To My Feet - Psalm 119:105

Psalm 119:105

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105

Lighthouse

A tower designed to emit light from a system of lamps and senses to serve as a navigational aid beacon for maritime pilots is called a lighthouse. They are usually put in dangerous coastlines, hazardous reefs, rocks, and safe entries to harbours; they are the traffic signs of the sea. In some cases, when the light goes off, the resulting accidents can be catastrophic since the ships do not know the steps to take. In this same manner, anybody who carries a lantern on a dark road at night sees only a step ahead. With every step forward, the lamp also moves forward and lights the way for the next step. He finally reaches his destination in safety without walking in darkness, yet the whole route is lit a single step at a time.

The psalmist identifies the word of God as our lamp. It is as equipped as a lighthouse would be so that every step of our way is lit. However, our feet are set in the darkness of the world, and it can be hard to navigate successfully in the dark. Many people begin their paths selfless and excited to be of service, but many lose their way with time. When Israel was leaving Egypt, God knew that if they were left to find the way to salvation by themselves, they would be brought back to Egypt by the morning. The illustration of the pillar of fire at night was significant to help them reach Canaan.

The Lantern

What then does it mean to be led by the light of the word of God? God’s word will not tell us which street to take to work, God’s word will not name the specific person we are to marry, nor will it tell us everything we should not do. However, as we understand and learn the principles of God through his word, it shines a light to direct us in our decisions and gives us the direction we desperately need at every point in life. Only the word of God can illuminate this right path and keep us from stumbling and falling.

Our Pathway

The word of God is alive and active, and it is sharper than any double-edged sword; it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrows, it judges the thoughts and attitudes of our heart (Hebrews 4:12). Therefore, reading, interpreting, and living by God’s word are essential as our daily food and drink. Just as we instinctively know to eat and drink and make plans to do so, we should respond likewise to scripture (Matthew 4:4). The tangible things, the people, and the ideas they exclusively represent pass away with time, but God’s word has remained steadfast and endured throughout generations (Mark 13:31).

God’s word is the light of truth, written for our learning to lead us away from every danger that crosses our pathway. It brightens and guards our journey through life and is a treasure trove of precious gemstones to be hidden in our hearts. The jewels contain wisdom, promises, and godly instructions on how to live right.
